Melissa Betancourt, Esq. is an Associate Attorney in the Elder Law division at RTRLAW, focusing on probate, estate planning, and guardianship matters. She was admitted to The Florida Bar in 2024 and is a proud first-generation Colombian American.
Ms. Betancourt earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from St. Thomas University College of Law in Miami, Florida, where she also received a Certificate in Elder Law. During law school, she served as Editor-in-Chief of the St. Thomas Law Review and published two legal articles in academic journals. She was actively involved in several student organizations, holding leadership roles as Treasurer of the Elder Law Society and the Hispanic American Law Student Association, and Secretary of Phi Alpha Delta. She also served as an Academic Success Program (ASP) Fellow, mentoring incoming law students.
While in law school, Ms. Betancourt interned with the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida, Probate Division, where she conducted legal research, drafted probate orders, and observed hearings and trials under Judge Gillespie. She also gained experience as a law clerk at multiple firms, focusing on probate, estate planning, guardianship, and civil litigation.
Prior to entering the legal field, Ms. Betancourt worked as a Settlement Specialist at a public adjusting firm, where she negotiated and resolved hundreds of property insurance claims. She holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Criminology and Anthropology from the University of Florida.
Ms. Betancourt is bilingual in English and Spanish and is based in South Florida, working from the firm’s Fort Lauderdale headquarters. She is passionate about guiding clients through the legal challenges of aging and long-term care.
In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, crafting, and spending time with her family, friends, and pets.
